23.04 – 21.05.2022
MISAKO & ROSEN is pleased to present Hinaga, the European debut solo exhibition of Tokyo-based artist, Yui Yaegashi. Yaegashi has previously exhibited at spaces including Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo, i8 gallery, Reykjavik, Parrasch Heijnen, Los Angeles and The Modern Institute, Glasgow, and Queer Thoughts and White Columns, both New York. In the summer of 2022, Yaegashi will present a solo exhibition with LambdaLambdaLambda in Prishtina.
On the face of it, Yui Yaegashi’s paintings deal in fundamentals : color, line, surface, scale. Upon closer examination, it becomes clear that these paintings, while formal in their way, are highly personal objects. A bit of the backstory of their creation also suggests the systematic : Yaegashi works on several paintings, in oil, at once. Following a pre-determined set of steps, following a calendar, she plots out the making of each painting in advance. Yet a bit more of the backstory is revelatory; Yaegashi leaves room, within her highly determined work, for improvisation. Improvisation with different tools and varying manufacturers of the “same” color, etc., improvisation in general. And when situated within a space, the scale of these paintings beg for a closer look – they situate themselves and the viewer. And upon more than a glance, the paintings become conversant, personable and markers not of a particular form; but, rather, the momentary and what’s implied beyond.
